September 2022: Exhibit and Upcoming Classes in October

Writer: Karl HaglundKarl Haglund

CHARLES CITY, Iowa - It has been an exciting September so far here at your favorite local Arts Center. We are all super excited about our current exhibit titled "Roost" by artist Brenna Lacy. Its a unique show and a very impactful show. If you haven't stopped in to see it, I think you should. I really, really do.

The back gallery is closed off with tarps and the only way to see the show is by blacklight. Yes! The concept of the show is based around trauma and in the back, all of the paintings are done with laundry detergent on duralar (like a plastic? sort of). That's right, laundry detergent. Purex, I think. It glows in the dark with blacklights! The artists idea, per my understanding (these are just words) is that our dark secrets... our past, our trauma isn't always visible in the light, but when alone in the dark, its very visible to the person. And the concept of using laundry detergent is a bit like washing that away.

I love the idea that the medium used can help narrate the artists vision in such a profound way.

Here:

In our South gallery the works are all graphite on duralar. These are the only works for sale (we sold 3 at the opening). The concept was (I asked) is that the artist is willing to sell the external works on graphite, but the more personal works in the dark room are not for sale... they will be washed off at the end of the show.

Here are a few of the graphite works:

Anyway... I can't use enough fancy words to describe how cool this show is from concept to walls. It will be up for the rest of September. I'd love to walk you through it on a Saturday or just let you soak it in on your own terms.

The 2022 North Iowa Studio Tour is happening next weekend. Friday September 23rd from 4-7PM, Saturday Sept 24th from 10AM-6PM, and Sunday Sept 25th from 1-4PM. Admission is FREE. Stops include the Clear Lake Arts Center and Charles City Arts Center as well as 10+ studios in the area. The event is sponsored by Clear Lake Bank and Trust, CL Tel and Art on the Plaza in Mason City. It is sure to be a cool event.

*I never add my studio to these tours on account of the horrible mess. I can't work if I clean...

We have a couple classes coming up in October!

SPOOKY ARTS AND CRAFTS with Meredith Hamm is a great way to kick off the Halloween spirit (or SPIRITS for those of you who like puns) with the kids.

The classes are October 14th, 21st, and 28th from 4-5PM. Only 15 spots available!

Cost is $55 for non-members and $45 for members.

And... a shameless self-promotion:

I am doing a class next month. Photography Tips and Tricks.

There are a ton of tiny things people miss or overlook when taking portraits of people. Simple things like focusing on the right thing... eliminating distractions in a photo and how to frame the subject and make things look more artsy. Easy fixes.

Also, I will help people learn to shoot manual. Its a scary concept to some, but once you get the handle on it, its the only way to take great photos in my opinion. The camera is smart, but we are smarter.

Cost is $40 for non-members and $35 for members.

2-4PM 0n Saturday Oct 15th.

Location: CC Arts Center

An hour of "class" time and an hour of shooting together.

Art-A-Fest was a great time last month. Sure, it rained, but that stuff creates long lasting memories. My feet were soaked by 7:15am and I had 9 hours to go... I shall never forget those socks.

Lots of people floating around and smiling. Such a great event for the community and for art lovers. We are already looking forward to next year!

Reminder: We have a pretty cool pottery room with 4 wheels for your throwing pleasure.

Visit us for Open Studio Saturdays. 10AM to 2PM on Saturdays. The cost per month is $35 for non-members and $25 for members.

An understanding of pottery techniques would be beneficial. If you do not posses that knowledge, let us know. We have pottery professionals that may be willing to help you with a 1 on 1 class or possibly get a group class going.

Unsupervised children will be given kittens and puppies from PAWS.

My daughter comes to work with me sometimes on Saturdays, but not to hang out with me...

We hope you are all well!

Our hours are W-Th-F from 1-5PM and Saturday from 10AM-2PM.

You can contact us by calling 641-228-6284 or emailing us at charlescityarts@gmail.com
